The refractory industry in the past decade continued to help the development of the steel industry
2.1 Refractory materials industry to support the transformation of the steel industry
In terms of demand structure, China's steel industry accounts for about 65% of the total demand for refractory materials, and is the largest customer of refractory materials. At the same time, refractories also strongly support the development and progress of the iron and steel industry.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the transformation of China's steelmaking process from flat hearth to converter and die casting to continuous casting led to technological changes in the steel industry, and the refractory industry played a key role in this transformation. 1978, the state decided to build the Baoshan Iron and Steel General Factory, with complete sets of technology and equipment imported from Japan. In Baosteel's plant construction program, the state forward-lookingly proposed 28 refractory raw materials and products tapping projects to go with it, and arranged the construction as a key project simultaneously. The digestion, absorption and innovation of refractory technology introduced in Baosteel project is a typical case of refractories supporting the development of steel industry.
During the development of China's steel production from the level of 100 million tons in 2016 to >1 billion tons now, refractory materials have been completely localized. Al2O3-SiC-C castable for iron ditch has increased from 80,000~100,000 tons of iron throughput in 1990s to 200,000t of iron throughput now. Chinese enterprises developed and produced their own converter magnesium-carbon lining and air permeable elements for compound-blowing converter, making the converter age reach about 10,000 furnaces and meeting the demand for low-carbon smelting in large converters. Domestic development of silicon nitride combined with silicon carbide bricks, domestic continuous casting three major components, breathable elements functional materials, stainless steel refining with magnesium calcium bricks and other refractory materials, the progress of the steel industry has made an important contribution. 2011-2020, tons of steel refractory consumption levels continue to reduce, making a great contribution to the rapid development of the steel industry.
2.2 Refractory materials help steel industry innovation
During the "12th Five-Year Plan" period, the refractory industry has made significant progress in science and technology. Enterprise research and innovation capabilities have been strengthened, the intensity of innovation investment gradually increased, the formation of a number of high-level R & D platform and innovation team, enterprises generally established a combination of innovation system of industry, academia and research, and accelerate the industrialization of scientific research results. During the "12th Five-Year" period, important R & D innovation achievements are: functionalized refractories for clean steel smelting, refractories for large aluminum electrolytic cells, key refractories for top-fired hot air furnaces, long-life immersion spout for continuous casting of special steel, new long-life refractories for glass kilns and cement kilns, new materials and new construction techniques for unshaped refractories, comprehensive utilization of resources and new synthetic raw materials, etc. In terms of new chromium-free products, we have developed a series of magnesium-iron-aluminum composite spinel bricks for cement rotary kilns and a series of magnesium-calcium products for AOD furnaces, which guarantee environmental protection and the high-end of downstream products. The project "Key Technology and Application of Functionalized Refractories for Continuous Casting of Clean Steel Smelting" of Wuhan University of Science and Technology also won the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress.
"During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, a series of product innovations, technological innovations and service innovations were produced, covering low thermal conductivity and energy-saving refractories, environmentally friendly refractories, long-life refractories, and recycling of refractories after use. Technical innovation mainly includes refractory energy-efficient preparation process, spraying technology innovation, pumping technology innovation and promotion of prefabricated parts technology. At the same time the service model has also undergone a major change, from the previous pure product manufacturing type to production service type. Therefore, the development of the refractory industry has laid a solid foundation for the development of the steel industry, and at the same time, the technical progress of the refractory industry cannot be separated from the higher technical requirements put forward by the development of the steel industry.
The successful cooperation between refractory material enterprises and steel enterprises has provided valuable experience for China's refractory material industry to improve the downward vertically integrated industrial chain. Ruitai Liji successfully joined hands with two major steel groups, Xianggang Group and Ma Steel Group, and cooperated to establish Xianggang Ruitai and Ma Steel Ruitai joint ventures, guiding the combination of refractory material technological innovation advantages and the advantages of large steel enterprises in marketization, effectively reducing the consumption of refractory materials in steel mills and improving the safety and stability of steel enterprise operation.
