The types of refractories are mainly divided into alkaline refractories, acid refractories and neutral refractories, which are widely used and are an inorganic non-metallic material indispensable in our high-temperature industry.
1. Alkaline refractory materials
Alkaline refractories with magnesium oxide and calcium oxide as the main components, commonly used is magnesium bricks. Magnesium bricks containing 80% to 85% or more of magnesium oxide have good resistance to alkaline slag and iron slag, and higher refractoriness than clay bricks and silica bricks. It is mainly used in oxygen blowing converter, electric furnace, non-ferrous metal smelting equipment and some high temperature equipment.
2. Acid refractories
Acid refractories with silicon oxide as the main component, commonly used are silica bricks and clay bricks. Silica bricks are silica products containing more than 94% of silicon oxide, using raw materials such as silica, waste silica bricks, etc. Its resistance to acidic slag erosion ability, high load softening temperature, repeated calcination volume does not shrink, or even slightly expand; but its susceptibility to the erosion of alkaline slag, poor thermal shock resistance. Silica bricks are mainly used in coke ovens, glass kilns, acidic steel furnaces and other thermal equipment. Clay bricks with refractory clay as the main raw material, containing 30% to 46% alumina, is a weakly acidic refractory material, resistant to acid slag, widely used.
3. Neutral refractory materials
Neutral refractories with alumina, chromium oxide or carbon as the main components, corundum products containing more than 95% alumina is a more versatile and high-quality refractories. Chrome bricks with chromium oxide as the main component have good corrosion resistance to steel slag, but are less resistant to thermal shock and have a lower high temperature load deflection temperature. Carbon refractories are carbon bricks, graphite products and silicon carbide products, its coefficient of thermal expansion is very low, high thermal conductivity, good thermal shock resistance, high temperature strength, resistance to acid and salt erosion, especially weak acids and bases have good resistance, not subject to metal and slag wetting, light weight, widely used as high temperature furnace lining materials, also used as petroleum, chemical autoclave lining.
Refractory materials applied in special occasions are high temperature oxide materials, such as alumina, lanthanum oxide, beryllium oxide, calcium oxide, zirconium oxide, etc.; refractory compound materials, such as carbides, nitrides, borides, silicides and sulfides, etc.; high temperature composite materials, mainly metal ceramics, high temperature inorganic coatings and fiber reinforced ceramics, etc.
